The Siegen police pulled a tuned BMW out of circulation on Friday night (February 16th). The police officers noticed the car on the corner of Geisweider Straße and Birlenbacher Straße because of the loud exhaust noise. A closer inspection on the spot revealed that the car was being driven with modified suspension springs and also not with the original rims. The 23-year-old driver was unable to produce an operating license for the modified rims. He also stated that he had not made any changes to the exhaust system. A measurement with an uncalibrated sound level meter revealed a noise level 50 percent higher than that stated in the vehicle documents. The officers then seized the vehicle.

The police traffic service presented the BMW to an expert on Friday morning. On the basis of the technical modification (combination of springs/rim), it was determined that the vehicle was no longer roadworthy. Secondly, the measurements of the noise level using a calibrated measuring device showed significantly higher values than those measured by the police. Both violations led to the expiry of the operating license. The main cause of the loud exhaust noise was ultimately found to be that the entire exhaust system had been manipulated and the catalytic converter had been removed. Based on the expert opinion, the 23-year-old now faces a misdemeanor charge. In addition, he must now re-register the vehicle.
