(hd) On Wednesday (17.09.2025), the police carried out a district-wide focus check on small electric vehicles. This term refers in particular to so-called e-scooters and pedelecs. The checks took place on school routes and in the pedestrian zones in Herford and Bünde. A total of 60 infringements were detected in 100 vehicles checked. The penalties included the use of unauthorized traffic areas (e.g. sidewalks, pedestrian zones), riding in pairs, using cycle paths against the direction of travel, the use of smartphones while riding, the use of e-scooters by children under the age of 14 and offences under the Compulsory Insurance Act. Time and again, the misconduct of road users results in serious traffic accidents. Only on Tuesday (16.09.2025), an accident involving an e-scooter occurred in Bünde at the junction of Hochstraße and Wollfeldstraße, in which three people were injured (see press release from 17.09.2025). The police in the district of Herford rely on a mixture of preventive and repressive measures to increase road safety and prevent traffic accidents involving small electric vehicles. Unannounced priority checks will therefore continue to take place in the future.
